What Is Fiverr.com About?
Fiverr is an online platform for freelancers to offer a variety of services to customers worldwide. Its name comes from the original price of gigs at only a fiver per job.
Online freelancing roles have skyrocketed during quarantine as people were laid off or lost some sort of consistent income stream. Freelancing gives you a lot of freedom including being able to work from the comfort of your home.
Fiverr is just one of many online marketplaces to freelance a whole set of skills. Below I will discuss what you need to know about being a freelancer on Fiverr.
How To Get Started On Fiverr?
The process of becoming a seller on Fiverr is fairly simple. Once you create an account, you can begin creating gigs for the services you want to offer.
You will want to include a picture of yourself to make it more personable and include some samples of your work. You can then set your terms such as “I will proofread 1000 words”, “I will write a 500-word article”, “I will draw you as a cartoon”, etc.
Fiverr gives you three packages to offer to buyers, a Basic, Intermediate, and a Professional package. It is up to the seller to set the price, delivery time, words included, number of revisions, and any other features for each package.
Once you have this all set up, you are ready to start receiving orders!
Who Can Freelance?
Fiverr offers a multitude of services within the categories of graphic & design, digital marketing, writing & translation, video & animation, music & audio, programming & tech, business, lifestyle, and industries.
You can find some freelancers who work part-time and some who this is their full-time career. If you’re wanting to become a freelancer but don’t know which service to offer think about these two things.
1) What are your current skills?
2) What are you passionate about?
This is a great place to start thinking if freelancing is for you. The wide range of services makes your chances of finding something a lot higher, but it’s important to remember that freelancing is still a competitive field.
How Much Can A Seller Earn On Fiverr?
As implied by the name, the lowest one can charge per gig is $5. Fiverr takes a 20% cut, so if you charge $5 you will actually be making $4.
Most newer sellers will set their basic package to $5 to build their client base. The price can also vary by the service offered.
For example, if we take a look at transcription services, most sellers offer $5 as the starting price and a few charge above $30 for the basic package.
On the other hand, if we look at app development, we can see much higher starting prices ranging from $200 to $2,000! It also depends on the demand for the service, and the number of orders you are able to take on.
It should be noted that there are freelancers who make their living off of Fiverr earning anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000 a month. It really depends on the amount of time and effort you are willing to put in.
Pros As A Seller
- Wide Range of Services
As mentioned above, Fiverr has a variety of services that one can offer. This means you have the opportunity to open multiple gigs at the same time based on your skillsets. It goes without saying that the more services you can offer, the higher chance you have of building a strong client base the offers you a consistent revenue stream.
- Tips are Encouraged
Fiverr encourages buyers to leave sellers a tip once they leave a review, especially since they take a 20% cut from the sellers’ earnings. Buyers will usually leave tips that help offset the 20% cut and shows they appreciate the work done.
- Don’t Have to Bid on Work
Fiverr does offer Buyer Requests which allows sellers to bid on potential projects, but buyers are also able to come to a seller and place an order.
A buyer can even contact you prior to placing an order to ask if this is something you would be willing to do. This is really helpful if you are trying to freelance part-time and can’t spend all your time bidding on projects.
If a buyer likes your profile and what you have to offer, they will be coming to you for work.
Cons As A Seller
- 20% Commission
Fiverr takes a 20% cut from your earnings no matter what. This is different from the freelancing platform Upwork, for example, who starts with a 20% commission and then gradually decreases this after you’ve billed a certain amount with your clients.
- Reviews, Reviews, Reviews
To succeed on Fiverr, your reviews are one of the most important things.
Buyers will not be willing to place an order with you with lower reviews. They will also be less willing to place an order with you if you are just starting out and have no reviews.
When sellers first start out they will work extra hard to maintain good reviews to gain more credibility with buyers. There are times, however, when buyers will not communicate with the seller that they are unsatisfied with the final product. The buyer will simply move to give the seller a negative review instead of using the revisions option. This can feel frustrating, but it is important to remember that not everyone will like your work.
The best thing to do as a seller is to communicate to your buyer they are allowed a certain number of revisions, and you are more than happy to revise the work to meet their expectations.
- Low Prices
Fiverr is a competitive platform so as a new seller with no reviews you need to set your prices very low. This often means you are spending more time on a project than you are really getting paid for.
If you are working on 10 projects, making $5 each ($4 with the 20% cut), and spending a minimum of 2 hours on each one, that means you will be making $2 an hour. This is obviously extremely low, and might not seem worthwhile.
Due to the current pandemic and the job uncertainty, working for yourself as a freelancer may be the way to go. This is by no means easy and not guaranteed to bring in consistent income.
Fiverr is a good place to start and see if you can make some extra cash, but be aware you may be working more for what you are getting paid. It is by no means impossible to make a living off of this, as some already have, but keep in mind it will take a lot of time and sacrifice in the
beginning before it feels worth it.
